Primary STEM Clubs - Excellent Engineers
During January and February, Year 3 children at Cragside Primary School had the opportunity to participate in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) club. The club was led by Mr Turner, Y5 teacher, and Mr Colcough, STEM Officer, with the help of some parents who work in the engineering industry.
Pupils enjoyed sessions on electricity and hydropower with Emma Bassett (parent), and forces / bridge building with Alasdair Cook (parent governor). A further session investigated structural strength and stability through building skyscrapers using marshmallows and spaghetti. The final engineering challenge for the children was to build a shelter that would withstand the elements (a tap and a hairdryer!).
Thanks to everyone involved in running the club, including the Reece Foundation for their generous grant supporting STEM activities across the Trust. Mr Colclough will be working with Chillingham Road and Christ Church CE primary schools during the summer term as well as continuing to support all the great STEM activity at Cragside.
